I’m having a little bit of a moral dilemma here. I’m an aspiring stand up comedian and I have a bit/joke that is about the complete ridiculousness and stupidity of victim blaming and rape culture.
On the one hand, I know the joke intent is 100% about attacking the mindset of rape apologists. On the other hand, i don’t want to be a shitty person and needlessly alienate and offend a bunch of people and, since i know very little about things such as triggering,my question is this.
Even if the material is clearly antithetical to ‘rape jokes’ as they are usually presented (ie. condoning), does the fact that I even broach the subject in this fashion necessitate some sort of warning to the crowd?* How vital is phrasing/framing? Should I even perform the joke?
I feel strongly about attempts to censor comedians in the general sense yet as a young, white male I can’t just blunder into every subject with a ‘fuck you, this is what i’m gonna say’ attitude, especially if the views i’m trying to get across to people are in favour of the people i’m trying not to offend.
*Obviously it would be easy for me to stick a warning in front of the joke and leave it at that but i don’t want to without doing this for two reasons. Firstly, a warning could potentially kill the flow of a set and considering a joke on rape culture would follow, a momentum killer is not the best entrance. Secondly, it seems lazy to have these feelings and just subdue them with a warning instead of actually seeking knowledge and trying to resolve the issue.
